A generated clip is a fixed length, but the take you keep is often shorter — a slow start, a wobble at the end, or a beat that should land tighter. In and out points let you cut the clip down without regenerating it. The trim controls sit under the video preview in the Shot Studio, and appear once a take is the shot’s active video.

Three ways to set the points

  • Drag the handles. The bar under the player shows the whole clip. Drag the left handle to set the in point and the right handle to set the out point. The preview scrubs to the frame under the handle as you drag, and the trim saves when you let go.
  • Mark at the playhead. Scrub the player to the exact frame, then click Set In or Set Out — or press I or O, as in Premiere and Final Cut.
  • Type a timecode. Click either timecode to edit it. Times are SS:FF (seconds and frames at the clip’s frame rate), so 01:12 is one second and twelve frames. Press Enter to apply or Esc to cancel.
With a handle focused, the arrow keys move it one frame and Shift + arrow moves it ten. Clear removes the trim.
The preview plays only the trimmed range: pressing play starts at the in point and playback stops at the out point. Scrub outside the range to review what you cut.

What the trim applies to

The trim belongs to the shot and describes its active video. Where it takes effect:
  • Shot Studio preview and the scene and project players
  • Runtimes on shot, scene and project cards
  • Share Project — the shared film is stitched from the trimmed clips
  • Export XML — the Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro timelines carry the in and out points as a source trim, so the whole clip is still available in your editor
Export Media downloads the original, untrimmed files.
Choosing a different take as the active video, or generating a new one, clears the trim — a new take always starts untrimmed. Duplicating a shot copies its trim.
